The OneTHP project was launched at THP in early 2019 to implement the Epic Systems Corporation Hospital Information System. The project is underway and in its final phase before implementation with go-live in the near future. After the completion of the OneTHP project, a team will continue to oversee the maintenance, support and continued evolution of the Epic platform working closely with Information Services (IS) team and leadership.

 

The Position

 

The Director of Technology and Integration role will have two distinct phases with different accountabilities as part of each phase. This position will report to the AVP, OneTHP Executive Lead in both phases, the project phase and operations phase to support the Epic Hospital Information System as installed at THP.

 

The individual who fulfills this position is an experienced leader combining excellent leadership skills with managing teams, extensive knowledge of information technology and integration, and the ability to balance operational needs and stability, with strategic thinking. This individual will need to have strong collaboration skills to work closely with other leaders within the OneTHP structure as well as other departments including Information Services (IS).

 

During the project phase, the Director will work collaboratively with other OneTHP project leaders, IS Leaders and Epic leaders to ensure project milestones are met, planning activities have been completed and activities executed per approved plans. Areas of accountability include but are not limited to:

  • Provides guidance, direction, mentoring, coaching and training to a direct report team of approximately 18 individuals,
  • Models accountability, responsibility, and the values of THP to the team,
  • Installation and configuration of Epic hardware (server, storage, network) per approved design, testing of all technology installed including load testing and balancing,
  • System hosting and disaster recovery,
  • Database administration,
  • Technical standards,
  • Accountable for all change control related to OneTHP in alignment with corporate IS change control processes,
  • Fosters an environment which supports active participate in decision making,
  • Operating systems and virtualization,
  • Installation and testing of the citrix environment to support the Epic presentation layer,
  • End user devices including installation and testing in advance of go-live in alignment with the approved plan,
  • Oversight of Epic user access provision and application presentation,
  • Privacy and security including oversight of the Privacy Impact Assessment and Threat Risk Assessment and resolution of identified areas of risk prior to go-live,
  • OneTHP server patching and maintenance,
  • Vendor relationship management,
  • System data integration between Epic and third party vendors including go-live sequencing for all interfaces, BioMedical Device integration,
  • Data conversion and migration work in preparation for go-live,
  • Responsible for developing the technology and integration go-live plan to be executed on the day of go-live, and
  • Provide strategic leadership of the department which includes:
    • Clarifying each team member’s role and responsibilities
    • Providing ongoing and continual feedback of job performance
    • Consulting and collaborating with other disciplines and services
    • Formulating and assigning tasks to management team members, with clearly expressed standards of performance expectations.

During the operational phase of this role, areas of accountability include but are not limited to:

  • Provides guidance, direction, mentoring, coaching and training to a direct report team of approximately 10 individuals,
  • Models accountability, responsibility, and the values of THP to the team,
  • Service operation including release management, quarterly Epic upgrades and monthly service upgrades,
  • Incident management,
  • Fosters an environment which supports active participate in decision making,
  • Accountable for all change control related to OneTHP in alignment with corporate IS change control processes,
  • Maintenance and support of OneTHP servers,
  • Integration between Epic and third party vendors,
  • Oversight of Epic user access provision,
  • Working collaboratively with IS partners to ensure patching of servers, data centre management, end user device configuration, Citrix environment support and maintenance, and
  • Provide strategic leadership of the department which includes:
    • Clarifying each team member’s role and responsibilities
    • Providing ongoing and continual feedback of job performance
    • Consulting and collaborating with other disciplines and services
    • Formulating and assigning tasks to management team members, with clearly expressed standards of performance expectations.

The Director will work with the Epic technical team, internal stakeholders, external vendors, and contractors to implement the approved technology solution and project plan to fulfill the technology requirements of OneTHP.

 

Here’s what you will get to do:

  • Participate as a member of the leadership team for a large scale Hospital Information System (HIS) project with Epic Systems Corporation and member of the operations team reporting to the AVP and Executive Lead, OneTHP.
  • Collaborate with a dynamic group of leaders at THP in the completion of the project and movement to operations.
  • Provide excellent leadership to a team of experienced individuals including technical subject matter experts to execute the project plan and support in operations.
  • Execute the approved technology and integration project plan on time and within the specified project budget and resources.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all technical and integration items related to OneTHP both in the project and operational structure.
  • Act as the primary technology interface for the OneTHP project and operational structure, with Epic and other related third party vendors and the hospital’s existing information technology teams.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Produce high-level architecture documentation and low-level system specifications.
  • Oversee all OneTHP information technology procurement in collaboration with the OneTHP Director of Procurement, implementation and production turn-over activities.
  • Maintain a strong and constant IT presence in all OneTHP meetings as well as during planning and design decisions.
  • Diagnose any core technology issues and gaps that may arise during planning, implementation and operations, and provide strategies to remediate them.
  • Participate in various meetings such as Project Governance, User Groups and Design Team Strategy sessions.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to business, executive, and technology audiences.
  • Ensure efficient project management principles and practices are in place to manage a highly demanding project work stream and operational team.
  • Provide human resource management, resource allocation and organize resources within the OneTHP technology team to deliver and fulfill requirements as part of the project and operational structures.
  • Facilitate involvement of existing THP specialists as required.

Here’s what you need to have:

  • Ten years of demonstrated progressive leadership experience in managing information technology in healthcare in project management and operational leadership.
  • University degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business or related degree required and preference given to Master’s level degree.
  • A technology certification such as MCSE, CISSP, CCIE, TOGAF is required.
  • Previous experience with the Epic Systems Corporation solution is an asset.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of infrastructure technologies including Operating Systems (Windows and Linux), application virtualization presentation technologies (Citrix), Directory Services (Active Directory), database (SQL), data integration and archiving (BizTalk), networking (Cisco), data storage and backup technologies is required. 
  • Familiarity with commonly used healthcare applications is an asset.
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to lead large complex teams.
  • Excellent collaboration skills with individuals at multiple levels of the organization and across departments and external stakeholders.
  • Proven experience in developing infrastructure technology designs and implementation plans.
  • Leading and facilitation of infrastructure design sessions and producing system design configurations and artifacts.
  • Strong presentation and facilitation experience with a diverse group of people at all levels of an organization.
