Position: Research Assistant II (Clinical) File #:  2022-27910 Compenastion Grid Range: $21.86/hour - $27.29/hour commensurate with demostrated and documented experience Status:  Temporary Full Time (1 year contract) Department: Institute for Better Health Site:  Mississauga Hospital Posted:  September 08, 2022 Internal Deadline:  October 08, 2022 Trillium Health Partners - Institute for Better Health   Trillium Health Partners (THP) is the largest community-based hospital network in Canada. Comprised of Credit Valley Hospital, Mississauga Hospital and the Queensway Health Centre, Trillium Health Partners serves the growing and diverse populations of Mississauga, West Toronto and surrounding communities. THP is a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto and home of the Institute for Better Health. The Institute for Better Health (IBH) is a critical component of THP Solutions, the research, innovation and revenue generating division of THP driven to find innovative, evidence-based approaches to solving the most complex health care challenges and building a culture of innovation at all levels across THP with our partners beyond our walls. IBH was created to help shape a new kind of health care for a healthier community and currently leads research and innovation projects that align with the hospital’s goals and supports the advancement of research and innovation across the hospital – all with the intent of improving health and transforming care. Being embedded in one of the largest hospitals in Ontario offers exciting opportunities to test solutions that can be adapted to impact health in our community, province, country and beyond. IBH and THP truly are the place where we bring leading evidence and research to life. With our partners in the community, IBH offers the perfect catchment for both broad health system study and impact.   The Role   The Research Assistant role within the IBH supports research studies and initiatives across the organization and within the community. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in a multivariate stakeholder environment both independently and as part of collaborative multi-disciplinary focused research groups supporting various projects. This role facilitates the responsible conduct of research through support of research studies within THP. This support includes coordinating research study logistics, undertaking the daily study activities and meeting the ethics and regulatory requirements of various research studies.   Through this role the successful candidate will support the following research studies.   Dr. Ian Zenlea, Paediatric Endocrinology, Clinician Scientist & Lead, Family and Child Health Initiative   Keeping in Touch (KiT) with Young Adults as They Transition through Type 1 Diabetes Care: For young adults living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) moving from pediatric to adult care can be overwhelming because many feel unprepared and find it difficult to make a meaningful connection with the new adult team. It is also challenging for young adults to balance their diabetes self-care with other competing priorities such as education, social activities, and work putting them at risk for life-threatening complications and poor diabetes control. We know that many young people find it challenging to attend diabetes clinics and that we can improve the connectedness between young people and their pediatric and adult diabetes teams. Our study aims to improve the lives of young adults as they move from pediatric to adult care using a text-message-based algorithm (KiT) that operates like a chatbot and will send SMS messages to participants in the experimental arm, consisting of T1D personalized support, education, resources, and a collection of outcome measures. Attrition in pediatric obesity management: A randomized feasibility study: In the past 20 years, Canada’s healthcare system set up many clinics to treat childhood obesity. However, up to 80% of children who enroll at these clinics drop out before they finish treatment. This is one of the most difficult problems in managing childhood obesity. Even the most effective treatments can’t help children who drop out. However, children who stick with treatment longer are more likely to see success in managing obesity. Our feasibility study will test if Family Navigation (FN) is useful for reducing this drop out from obesity treatment. We will use our results to plan a larger clinical trial. That kind of trial can give definite answers on whether family navigation is effective and useful, for children with obesity and for the healthcare system. We will enroll 108 children, from 6 to 17 years old, with obesity. Children will be receiving treatment from obesity management clinics in Edmonton, Calgary, and Mississauga.   Dr. Louis Peltz, Psychiatrist   A Focused Suicide Prevention for Youth Presenting to the Emergency Department with Suicide-Related Behaviour: A Multi-Site Randomized Controlled Trial (SAFE-RCT): Suicide is a leading cause of death among Canadian youth, claiming more lives than any medical illness, including cancer. Suicide prevention is possible, and early intervention is needed. We will examine the effectiveness of a previously-piloted, ED-based suicide prevention intervention using a randomized clinical trial design. This multi-site study will determine whether our patient- and family-centered intervention is more effective than enhanced usual care in reducing suicide-related behaviours in 330 youth at high-risk of suicide. Role Requirements   The successful candidate must meet the following qualification and skill requirements and demonstrate the ability to take on the following responsibilities: Qualifications and Skills   • Successful completion of a Community College Diploma (3 year program) or equivalent • 1 - 2 years related clinical research experience • Experience with coordinating research activities across multiple internal and external partners • Demonstrated initiative, independence, organization and productivity • Demonstrated experience with project planning, management, and coordination • Broad knowledge and understanding of the clinical environment • Certification in research ethics core principles and guidelines - Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS 2) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP)   Responsibilities   • Obtain informed consent from study participants • Perform research interviews with patients and caregivers as required by the study protocol • Contact participants to follow up on research materials • Perform/assist with data collection, data entry in REDCap, database maintenance and cleaning • Initiate and maintain research charts in EPIC • Monitor adverse events and follow reporting requirements • Read and have knowledge of protocol and study measures • Follow standardized operating procedures, and regulations and policies governing clinical research • Assist in training/orientation of new research staff • Other responsibilities as may be assigned     Competencies:   • Takes ownership, accountability, and responsibility for his/her/their actions and own performance • Demonstrates an ability to accept change and manage change effectively • Seeks new experiences to develop his/her/their capabilities • Demonstrates a pattern of self-development and a drive to learn by engaging in formal and informal learning to develop knowledge and technical skills • Demonstrates integrity, humility, maturity, empathy, and a positive attitude • Works collaboratively with others to meet goals • Speaks and writes clearly, concisely, and with impact • Takes pride in his/her/their work, balancing quality, capacity and risk • Demonstrates critical thinking skills • Seeks out, considers, and integrates the appropriate data, ideas, and experiences to take initiative in making decisions and solving problems Equity and antiracism are essential to academic excellence, and fosters the inclusion of voices that have been underrepresented or discouraged.
